Get to know the beautiful ENCI area!

The ENCI area is located near Mount Saint Peter in Maastricht. This beautiful spot, unique in the Netherlands, stretches between the Jeker and Meuse rivers in the south of the Province of Limburg.

ENCI has been quarrying limestone here since 1926. The limestone is used for making various types of cement. After more than 91 years of extracting limestone, an impressive nature reserve is being created, offering ample room for recreation. Sustainable innovation of the onsite business premises gives a boost to local employment. The ENCI area has become a real gem for both the city and the region.

Since 2010, ENCI, nature organisation 'Natuurmonumenten', Municipality of Maastricht, the Province of Limburg and a representation of local residents have beeen working closely together on executing the 'Transformation Plan' for the ENCI Area. Stichting Ontwikkelingsmaatschappij ENCI-gebied is the organisation tasked with safeguarding the quality and progress of the project.

Walk through the quarry
Part of the limestone quarry was opened to the public in 2017. From the viewing point at the Luikerweg in Maastricht you can descend a more than 200 step staircase into the quarry. Once down, the walking path leads you through old corridors and calcareous meadows, past the 'Onder D'n Olifant' pond and the natural pool to the other side of the quarry.

Visiting hours quarry
You can visit the quarry daily during the following visiting hours:

  • 1 April - 1 September: 8am-8pm
  • 1 September - 1 April: 9am-5pm

How to get there

  • Currently the quarry can only be reached via the staircase (park at the Luikerweg in Maastricht at the car park near Châlet Bergrust). From there, continue straight ahead.  A walk of around 30 minutes will bring you to the spectacular viewing platform and the staircase where you can descend into the quarry.
  • From 1 May 2018, the path will also be accessible from Châlet D'n Observant. On Lage Kanaaldijk in Maastricht follow the signs ' Calamiteitenroute 1' .

Please note: due to the presence of sheep and goats dogs are not allowed in the quarry! Swimming is not permitted  anywhere in the quarry.

Unfortunately, due to a variance in levels the quarry is nog accessible for people with a disability.
